In this section you can find a selection of things related with “what to do” and “what to see” in Gijón and its surroundings this summer.
Go for a stroll or take a dip at the San Lorenzo Beach.
Right in the heart of the city you’ll find the San Lorenzo beach, a magnificent natural beach where you can enjoy a sunny day and cool down in its temperate waters.
The beach has a long 5 km long promenade, known in the city as “el Muro” (the Wall) and it is a very popular spot during the Gijón summer.
As well as the San Lorenzo beach, Gijón has another beach area towards the west of the city. They are two artificial beaches, the Poniente beach and the Arbeyal beach which, back in the day, formed part of the city’s shipyards.
Visit the Elogio del Horizonte (Eulogy to the Horizon).
Going up via the Santa Catalina mount you can visit the “Elogio del Horizonte”, an impressive sculpture which has become a symbol of the city.
The views of the bay from this spot are really breath-taking.
Walk around the marina.
As well as enjoying our Boat Rides activity to get to know the bay of Gijón in a different way, the marina is a great place to go out and enjoy in the early evening.
You can take a photo by the famous letters of Gijón and enjoy a cider from one of the many bars you’ll find along the promenade.
Enjoy the Cimadevilla district.
Situated right in the heart of the city and opening up to the sea, you’ll find the old fishermen’s district, Cimavilla – literally, “above the town”-. In recent decades the district has gradually been transformed and its former residents have begun to disappear to give way to another type of population who have been attracted to the spot as it is such a typical area. Narrow streets, small restaurants, numerous bars… are dotted around its streets and squares.
If you decide to take the plunge and stroll around a little, you’ll definitely find some square teeming with people who are looking to meet up and have some fun.
La Laboral Building.
This monument if the biggest building in Spain and the highest in Asturias, another of the major icons of the city that you just can’t miss. In its interior you’ll also find the church with the largest elliptical floor in the world.
Asturian cuisine.
If you visit Gijón or any other area of Asturias, you simply can’t miss our cuisine.
Enjoy our typical dishes in any of the spots of the city. You can’t leave Asturias without trying a good fabada (bean stew) and/or a cachopo (veal fillets stuffed with ham and cheese), always accompanied by a bottle of cider. And despite what you might think, these are just two of the hundreds of typical dishes you’ll find in the restaurants of any spot of the city.
These are just a few of the many things you can enjoy in Gijón. You can always ask us for more information and activities when you visit us, and we’ll be only too glad to help.
